Participants may choose from award winning or nominated books in all seven award categories. Parents, teachers, and library staff will offer guidance on the appropriateness of book choices for each age group, particularly for those awards given to books geared towards a wide age range.

Preschool students are encouraged to select books from every category. Most awards select a picture book winner and honor each year. The Newbery medal is where you will have difficulty, as there are only a handful of picture books on that list.
First and second graders can read any of the picture books on the awards list, and there are smaller chapter books that you can find on our shelves, like the Beverly Cleary Ramona books.
Third and fourth graders should check out the Newbery, Schneider, and the GCBA winners and honors. We have a large selection to choose from in the Lower School library. If your student loves nonfiction, they should look for the Sibert Information books. While they can read picture books like the younger students, remember that they are required to read at least 3 chapter books.
Books like Charlotte's Web and Because of Winn Dixie would make great family read-alouds before bedtime, or you could listen to them over spring break via audiobook!
